Park statue celebrates Evelyn Miller’s memory

FLOYD — The short life of a 5-year-old murder victim has been memorialized with a statue of an angel at the Floyd Community Center.

“(The angel is) huge and she’s absolutely gorgeous,” said Pamela Hill of Mason City, who organized the memorial project. “Had it been one of my daughters, I’d be in awe.” Hill said a ceremony to unveil the memorial was being planned for as early as this weekend.

“It should be pretty impressive,” said Floyd Mayor Trevis O’Connell. The 8-foot-tall angel carries a medallion bearing the face of Evelyn Miller, Hill said.

Evelyn disappeared from her rural Floyd apartment on July 1. Her body was recovered two miles from her home in the Cedar River on July 6.

“I don’t think anyone in Floyd will ever forget it,” O’Connell said. “It’s in our minds. We’re sad that it occurred.” Hill said she was moved to memorialize Evelyn after following her story in the news. “I started it the day they found little Evelyn’s body,” said the mother of three children. “I don’t know the family or anyone like that, but I felt like I wanted to do something.” O’Connell said he was contacted by Hill the next day. “I think it’s a good idea,” he said. “If anything, it will be a reminder to parents to be more careful.”

The statue’s location was specifically chosen for its significance in the 6-day search for Evelyn by more than 1,300.

“Pamela had asked that it be at the community center,” O’Connell said, adding that several sites were available. “That’s where the main station was when they launched the search,” Hill explained.

After clearing the project with Evelyn’s family, O’Connell said the site was approved by the Floyd Community Center Board. He said another volunteer complimented Hill’s fund-raising efforts by pouring the foundation for the approximately $8,000 statue.“She’s such a sincere person and she really did a good job coming up with the money,” O’Connell said.

Though Hill conceived the project, she said many people helped make it possible.

“There have been a number of people to offer really substantial donations,” she said.

“We did some fund-raising, but we’re still about $1,200 shy,” Hill said. The difference, she said, is charged to her personal credit card. The memorial remained concealed at the community center on Thursday.

We live and work in central Iowa. My youngest son, Jeremiah, lives with us. My second oldest son, Andy, lives in Waterloo with his wife Lindsey and son Wesley. We lived in Charles City between 1991 and 1998. This is where Andy met Evelyn's mother, Noel Miller and where Evelyn was born in 1999. Andy and Noel never lived together. Andy claimed paternity of Evey and paid support to Noel for her care. Casey is a friend of Andy's who lived with Noel. Noel and Casey have two children ages one and two years old. Andy visited Evey alternate weekends and holidays. I hope that this background helps the reader. For more information see Evey's Family tree article.

Reward Stands In Evelyn Miller Case

By Jennifer Meyer, Staff Writer Charles City Press

Five months after the disappearance of 5-year-old Evelyn Miller, the Floyd County Attorney is reminding the public of a $5,000 reward to help find her killer.

The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Fund Foundation of Modesto, Calif., posted the reward in mid-July for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Evelyn’s death.

“That’s still out there,” Floyd County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer said Thursday.

She said information does not have to have been attained at the time of the murder.

“There’s always conversations going on and people maybe gained information more recently,” Dettmer said.

Evelyn Miller was reported missing from the rural Floyd apartment she shared with her mother, mother’s fiance and two toddler brothers early on July 1. Her body was found two miles from her home in the Cedar River on July 6.

Authorities say she was murdered, but have not released how or when she was killed. No arrests have been made in the case.

Evelyn’s mother’s fiance, Casey Frederiksen, 26, of Charles City, was indicted by a federal jury last month on two counts of possession of child pornography and 12 counts of receipt of child pornography. He is being held in Linn County Jail awaiting trial.

Dettmer said the federal charges are separate, but related to the murder investigation. The state homicide investigation, she said, is ongoing and remains intense.

The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Fund Foundation was established by Francis and Carole Carrington to help families of homicide victims. Their daughter and two other women were found murdered in Yosemite National Park in February 1999. Investigators working the homicide received their first break in the case after the Carringtons posted a reward.

Letter to the Editor.

Five months have indeed passed since the disappearance and death of our granddaughter, Evelyn Miller.

Although we now live in the Des Moines area, it is very hard for us to believe that the local law enforcement in Floyd County has been unable to solve this case.

Marilyn Dettmer said,“There’s always conversations going on and people maybe gained information more recently.”

We remain hopeful that the citizens of Floyd County and Charles City will not stand by and see this case forgotten and will bring this information to law enforcement for justice to be served and a resolution to happen for the families involved.

Please, even if you have what seems to be to you a small bit of information, let the County Attorney know about it. It looks to us, that if no one speaks up, the community will hang its head in shame and say, "too bad." The conscience of the community will forever be in doubt. We believe that Charles City is better place than that.
